Natural is a community art project that explores the profound connection between nature and belonging. Artist and anthropologist Rucsandra Pop led intimate conversations with people from around the world who made Coimbra their new home. This project uncovers the surprising ways in which natural elements can bridge the gap between countries and cultures. A familiar tree, a certain flower, a river or an animal can become your more-than-human friend or even family member. These deeply personal stories reveal how nature serves as a universal language of comfort and belonging, helping newcomers find pieces of home in their adopted landscape.
Growing Community, One Story at a Time
The heart of Natural lies in its transformation of individual experiences into collective art that will be presented on May 16th on Quebra Costas, near Almedina Tower. This living artwork carries the voices and stories of people who decided to start a new life in Portugal, celebrating the natural elements that helped them grow new roots. A Community Dinner will bring together newcomers and long-time residents around this living installation, fostering meaningful dialogue and understanding. This gathering will transform the space into a "garden of new and old memories". Through sharing food we will contribute to an even more inclusive and connected Coimbra community.
We are gardeners, not flowers
The Natural project is inspired by this year's Anozero Art Biennial theme — "Segurar, dar, receber" (To hold, to give, to receive). It's also a tribute to an artwork from a previous edition of Anozero: the artistic and poetic intervention created by Moirika Reker and Gilberto Reis, installed in the São Sebastião Aqueduct (or Arcos do Jardim).

Natural é um projeto de arte comunitária que explora a profunda ligação entre a natureza e o sentimento de pertença. A artista e antropóloga Rucsandra Pop conduziu conversas íntimas com pessoas de todo o mundo que fizeram de Coimbra o seu novo lar. Este projeto revela as formas surpreendentes como os elementos naturais podem unir países e culturas. Uma árvore familiar, uma certa flor, um rio ou um animal podem tornar-se o vosso amigo mais-que-humano ou até mesmo um membro da família. Estas histórias profundamente pessoais revelam como a natureza serve como linguagem universal de conforto e pertença, ajudando os recém-chegados a encontrar pedaços de casa na sua paisagem adotada.
Fazendo Crescer Comunidade, Uma História de Cada Vez
O coração do Natural reside na sua transformação de experiências individuais em arte coletiva que será apresentada no dia 16 de maio no Quebra Costas, perto da Torre de Almedina. Esta obra de arte viva carrega as vozes e histórias de pessoas que decidiram começar uma nova vida em Portugal, celebrando os elementos naturais que as ajudaram a criar novas raízes. Um Jantar Comunitário reunirá recém-chegados e residentes de longa data em torno desta instalação viva, promovendo diálogo e compreensão significativos. Este encontro transformará o espaço num "jardim de memórias novas e antigas". Através da partilha de comida, contribuiremos para uma comunidade de Coimbra ainda mais inclusiva e conectada.

O projeto Natural é inspirado pelo tema da Bienal de Arte Anozero deste ano — "Segurar, dar, receber". É também uma homenagem a uma obra de arte de uma edição anterior da Anozero: a intervenção artística e poética criada por Moirika Reker e Gilberto Reis, instalada no Aqueduto de São Sebastião (ou Arcos do Jardim).
